Dr. Mark Butler currently serves as Dean of the College of Education at Anderson, a College devoted to teacher preparation. Prior to this position, he was a faculty member at Indiana University-Bloomington and before that, spent five years on the faculty at Asbury University. At Asbury, Dr. Butler served as Associate Dean of the School of Education, as well as the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education/Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation coordinator. During his time as a certified Special Educator in public schools, he taught in an alternative school setting and as a behavioral interventionist at the secondary level. He completed his PhD at the University of Kentucky in Special Education. Dr. Butler’s areas of research focus on serving individuals diagnosed with high-incidence disabilities in inclusive settings, including curriculum development in mathematics and examining high-leverage practices to support all students. In addition to being involved with the state and national level of the Council of Exceptional Children (CEC), he is currently involved in the American Council for Rural Special Education (ACRES), the South Carolina Educational Dean’s Alliance (SCEDA), and serves on the executive board for the South Carolina Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA) and in 2023 was selected to serve on a state-wide review of Teacher Recruitment and Retention in South Carolina through Proviso 1.114 of the 2022-23 General Appropriation Act and with the Higher Education Consortium for Special Education (HECSE). Dr. Butler is married to Dr. Krissie Butler and together they have one daughter, Avery Elizabeth.
