Mr. Avery Shorts, affectionately known as Mr. A, is a dedicated third-year, 6th grade English Language Arts teacher in Columbia, S.C. He is passionate about fostering an environment of love and learning for both his students and his community. Beyond the classroom, Mr. A coaches the school’s Step Team. He also serves as the advisor for a Male Mentoring Club, where his mentees engage in meaningful discussions centered around the initiatives three core tenets: RElate, REclaim, and REspect.
Mr. A was a recipient of the 4-year Call Me M.i.S.T.E.R scholarship, an organization designed to train minority males to become effective role models in education! He was voted and confirmed as President-Elect of the South Carolina Council of Teachers of English (SCCTE), a statewide affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Mr. A earned his bachelor’s degree in English Educational Studies from Coastal Carolina University, is currently pursuing a masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and proudly represents his values as a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc!
